About our organisation...
The club was formed at a meeting in Beith Townhouse on 3rd December, 1923, with David H Wilson as President, James S Graham as Vice President, George W Morrison as Captain, Robert Smith as Vice Captain, Jack W Whyte as Secretary and Allister Millar as Treasurer. Committee Members were Tom McGill, Leslie Martin, PJ Edwards, John Pettigrew and John Malcolm. The yearly subscription was fixed at 2/6d per year for Seniors and 2/- per year for Juniors with training on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons. Twenty seven seniors and twelve juniors were enrolled after the meeting. At the first Committee meeting on 11th December arrangements were made to rent Mrs. Hood‘s store as Headquarters at a charge of 2/6d per week. Patron - Mrs Watson of Grangehill

John Calder, Ayrshire 440 yds Champion 1928-29. John was a good half-miler and could have made a name for himself at cross-country but preferred to run alongside some of the slower runners to encourage them.

John Malcolm acted as a Starter until the 50s.
Leslie Martin was the Club Treasurer for 25 years.
George Morrison
Thomas J McAllister, Ayrshire 100yds, 220 yds Champion 1928-29, Commonwealth Games finalist in 440 yds. Tom was a woodwork teacher at Dalry High School, where he coached the football team and produced several internationists.
Alex F Neilson (Sanny). He was a close friend of George Dallas (see “Whatever the Weather” P35, 96 and 122). He also founded the Ayrshire Harrier Clubs Association in 1924. President of the National Cross Country Union of Scotland 1948-49.
James Quinn, “the Man from Beith” kept fit all his life but made his name in the Glasgow Marathons after the age of 70 to get a medal for each of his four grandchildren.
